I'm Back!!

So, I'm finally back blogging. I really don't have time to be doing it this week, but what the hay... I don't feel like doing the gobs of homework that I have to do. I'm feeling peppy and refreshed after a long Thanksgiving weekend at home, so here's to blogging... and to heck with homework!!

I could spend a while discussing the humor of spending the holiday weekend at home with the family members that now live in my house, which includes my immediate family plus my two grandmothers and my grandma's cousin. Three women over the age of 80!! woowoo!!! What could be better than that?! They actually have a special name....the Silver Foxes... how perfect is that?! It actually lends itself to some pretty humorous situations...old ladies can really get competitive with one another, and about the silliest things ever!!

But instead, I'll write about one of the funniest things that happened all break, which happened tonight, AFTER I returned to school. As usual, my dad put me on an early flight back to Maryland, and I was back at school HOURS before liberty expired. I thought about starting my homework, but I ended up piddling around, doing basically nothing for a while. I was talking to my wise and incredibly beautiful friend Chastity, and she suggested I go to the hockey game to pass the time. "Hmm," I thought to myself, "I COULD do that." So, I rounded up a couple of friends and headed to the game.

So my buddy Matt (his pic is in a few posts back) and I found a bench to sit on, right next to a pretty girl sitting all by herself. Matt sat in the middle in between the girl and me, and immediately started ignoring me and trying his "game" on her. Needless to say, from what I could tell at the time, he was doing pretty well...conversation and what not was going well. He told me later that she had told him that she was there to watch a Navy hockey player, but that she was not dating him and was not his girlfriend. Hmm...sounds a little shifty to me. Anyway, when we were getting ready to leave at the end of the first period, Matt leans over to me and says, "Hey Ruthie, do you have a pen in your purse?"

"Uh, no, I don't think so," I said as I reached for it. As I looked into my purse and found a pen, I realized WHY he was asking for it. I said to him, "You're gonna have to ask for her number soon because we're leaving."

He replied, "Don't worry, I'm just waiting for the perfect time." Perfect time my fanny. He then proceeded to have a conversation with her that I couldn't hear, but I could tell he was successful because I saw her scribbling her number on a scrap of paper. He later filled me in that when he asked her for her number, she said, "(giggling) You know I'm here to watch someone playing down there." He replied, "Yes, I know, and I'm SURE he'll have a big problem with this." Apparently after that comment, she giggled again, and proceeded to give him her number.

Ah, yes, and to top it all off, when I got back to my room, he IMed me to say, "Ruthie, you can invite me to go to hockey games with you ANYTIME."

Wow. What is wrong with this picture?

A good weekend in store??

I'd have to say that most of my weekends this semester have all run together into one big mush. We've had so many home football games this year that I feel like all of my Saturdays have been spent at the stadium and all of my Sundays have been spent at mass and the coffee place with a trip to the mall thrown in once in a while. And the few times we haven't had a home game, my weekends are essentially the same, just without the game. That should show you how exciting my life is!

So anyway, I thought this weekend would be a pretty hum-drum weekend with no football game, full of much-needed sleep and relaxation. That was until I found out on Sunday night that Chastity, one of my best pals EVER, is coming to visit from Bryn Mawr. Then, if that news wasn't good enough, I found out the next day that my sister and brother-in-law are going to be here as well! My weekend went from dull to packed in 24 hours!!! I couldn't be happier.... having friends visit is better than Christmas (just like unexpected phone calls), not to mention multiple friends in one weekend! I don't know if my boring life can handle all this excitement!!!

Hopefully some exciting posts to follow...

The Wisdom in "You've Got Mail"

Everyone has a favorite movie that he/she watches over and over again. There is no shame in that. Yet I endure much criticism for being a huge fan of You've Got Mail with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. This could be because seeing this movie so many times has taken away from my seeing many OTHER (hehe) classics of American film. I also think people think that a cute, predictable, chick flick cannot be someone's favorite movie. Well, I beg to differ. You've Got Mail is simply amazing.

First off, if there is a movie star that I'd say I strive to be like, it's Meg Ryan. But not necessarily Meg Ryan the person, but Meg Ryan the movie character because if you've seen more than 2 or 3 of her movies, you know that she ALWAYS plays the same character. ALWAYS. When Harry Met Sally, French Kiss, You've Got Mail (YGM), she's the same every time. Slightly anal, extremely cute, and always enjoyable. In the case of YGM, I could so see myself as Kathleen Kelly, living in an adorable apartment, owning a children's bookstore, and meticulously putting Christmas ornaments on her tree. Oh yes, and you can't forget her daily stops at Starbucks....I am definitely all about that! I could also be cute and charming when Joe Fox walks into the store, and I could perfectly play the parts when she is annoyed with him....like when he takes the caviar garnish or when he shows up at the restaurant when she is waiting for NY152 (which is really him! *sigh*). Oh yeah, and her hair...I LOVE her hair!

Now, to move onto the best part of the movie....the development of Joe and Kathleen's relationship. Ahhh....it is so great! They hit it off when they talked on the internet, but the beautiful thing is that they never talked about anything personal. They fell in love with each other by learning little tid-bits about each other that really actually reveal a lot. I love Joe's email that says, "Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to go out and buy school supplies...I would buy you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address, but at least this not knowing has its charms." I don't know how much of a fan I am of online relationships, but the greatest part about theirs is that the chemistry was still there when they met in person. After they got past the part of being business rivals, well actually after Kathleen's bookstore got put out of business by Fox Books, they realized that there was something between them. They actually fell in love with each other in two separate worlds...in online world and in the real world...man, were they meant for each other! I never cry at movies, but when Kathleen says, "I wanted it to be you! I wanted it to be you so badly!" at the end when they meet in the park, I could ALMOST cry....but not quite.

I know I've quoted the YGM a lot so far, but there is one final quote which is by far my favorite. In one of her emails to Joe when her bookstore has just started to take a bad turn, Kathleen writes, "Sometimes I wonder about my life. I lead a small life. Well, valuable, but small. And sometimes I wonder, do I do it because I like it, or because I haven't been brave? So much of what I see reminds me of something I read in a book, when shouldn't it be the other way around?" Oh, how true that is!
